Frequently Asked Questions

Can I join the orchestra?

For woodwind, brass and other players, we hold auditions at the start of the academic year (October). For string players, no auditions are required. We accept both student and non-student members. For all players, please sign up to register your interest.

What standard do I need to be to play with CGO?

A our repertoire can be quite challenging, we typically ask for grade 8 standard or above (UK examination boards). However, please don't be discouraged if you have taken a lower grade, but have at least several years' experience playing with an orchestra.

When/where do you rehearse?

We usually rehearse 7:30-10pm on Sunday evenings at the Pavilion Room in Hughes Hall. One week before each concert, we typically have a longer afternoon rehearsal on Saturday or Sunday at West Road Concert Hall. Please sign up to our mailing list to receive regular updates about rehearsal times and venues.

Can I join the committee?

We always encourage as many members as possible to help with the running of the orchestra. The committee is made up of volunteers from players.

I am a soloist. Can I play a concerto with you?

We regularly play concerts with soloists. Typically, we hold auditions for the coming concert season around June/July. Please listen out for calls for applications.

I am a conductor. Can I conduct concert(s) with you?

Please contact the committee to register an interest.
